During the week of May 23-29, Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 7; Kona and Puna, 3 each; and South Kohala, 2.
So far this year, there have been 461 DUI arrests compared to 414 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.4 percent.
There have been 625 major accidents so far this year compared to 605 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.3 percent.
So far this year, there have been nine official fatal crashe, one with multiple deaths, resulting in 10 official fatalities, compared to seven official fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 10 official fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 28.6 percent for fatal crashes.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
